The Whitefish is a gigantic vessel which would take an unreasonable amount of time to traverse if on foot. To deal with this, some of its elevators are set on an extensive automated magnetic rail system which allows elevator cabins to travel side-to-side, forward-and-backward, and up-and-down with great speed. These specialized “railevators” are only accessible through transport hubs, of which there is one to each wing. Railevators will only ever take individuals between wings, so standard “analog” elevators must be used for going between different levels within a wing. Stairs are also available within each wing, but are rarely used.

The standard-fare departmental residency as provided by one's employment contract is technically free, though some of its cost does come out of the paycheck. The general population will be afforded a rather small studio apartment of about 400ft² (~121m²) with all the essentials: a mealblock with compact appliances, a respiteblock area with a desk and recuperacoon, and an ablutionblock. Included are shelves, a wardrobizer, and other mid-size storage solutions.

In Wing E there are three available tiers of paid-for residency: Midscale, Upscale, and Suite. Many workers will find the midscale accommodations affordable within their budget, but upscale and suite residency tiers are typically only available to the upper income brackets, suites especially so.

The paid tiers all come in single-respiteblock designs, rather than the studio layout of the standard quarters. Midscale accommodations measure in at a modest 600ft² (~182m²), upscale ones at a more spacious 750ft² (~228m²), and suites at 900ft² (~274m²); residency blocks never reach penthouse proportions, as space is at a premium aboard any vessel. Although paid-for residency sections are listed in the ship mapbook as belonging to the "Accommodations" department, this is solely to demonstrate that these residencies are open to employees of any position.
